The next task given to us is a Foley Sound project. I've always been wanting to try to make my own Foley Sound so I was really excited when the teacher told us about this project.
Last year, the seniors all did the foley sound of the same scene. However, for this year we are given the freedom to choose our own video. Although it's more fun to go with what we want, it also unintentionally added more work for us to do. To make it as easy to do as possible, we tried to look for scenes with little to no dialogue, no soundtracks or film scores needed, and not too complicated sounds. Later on, we found a short scene of Mr. Bean that fits perfectly with the criteria and decided to go with it.
After choosing the video we want to do, we proceeded to list out all of the sounds that we need to recreate on a word file.(https://docs.google.com/document/d/1WOm1BbiJ5uO5cYPSYemvfXpp72Y6HwDwsEzHk9S4sqg/edit?usp=sharing) This helps us to know what tools we need to bring on the day and also keep track of our progress!
Next we find ourselves a quiet room and started recording right away! The process was fun and brain racking at the same time: some sounds were perfect but then some others didn't sound the way we imagined it would be. Hence, we had to think of an alternative which wasted some of our time throughout the process. Some of the sounds I found hard to recored are the sound of the analogue clock (we couldn't recreate the resonance since our bowl was too small), the sound of footsteps and objects dropping into water (both are too quiet to hear),...
Nevertheless, I think we did a great job and the sounds were not so terrible. However there was something we didn't take into account: the room tone. Since we didn't add the room tone, in between parts where there are not foley sounds the video were totally silent which made the sounds and the video seem unnatural. This is something that I would definitely take notice when I film our final project.
Overall, this was a very fun project to work on, I am proud of our video and learnt some helpful lessons!
