To be candid, the first thing I searched for wasn't the openings of well-rated movies, but rather the opening scenes of previous AS media students, to set a realistic goal for myself, and also learn from their experiences. Two of the openings that I love the most are:

This is a thriller opening that I think the filmmakers did really well in utilizing sound and shot sizes to intensify the scene. They used a lot of foley sounds, and dissonance combined with extreme close up shots to show the character's emotions and establish the dangerous circumstance of the movie. Since I plan to make a crime/mystery thriller, this a great example that shows me how to incorporate different elements to raise tension. I also noted down how they used dark colors and red to indicate violence and cause an eery feeling.

I really liked the way the filmmakers use colors in this opening: The pinkish-purple light shown when she is getting ready exudes a strong and alluring vibe, which says a lot about her character: confident and tough person. Furthermore, they also combined party lights with a slow-motion and blurring effect, indicating that the character is drunk. I learnt some techniques from this film opening that I could use in my film.
Nevertheless, I also referred to multiple openings of famous movies to learn from the professionals and make my film opening seem as "non-amateur" as possible =))
These are 2 of my favorite Korean crime thrillers that use a lot of red herrings and plot twists. While the movie Mouse tricks the audiences into thinking the antagonist is the protagonist, the other movie plays out the other way around. But the common point between the 2 movies is that if you are a first-time viewer of the movie, you can never guess the ending, which is a thing i find very fascinating and exciting. Throughout the movie, they would give a lot of red herrings that keep us guessing back and fourth, and when we seem to think that we finally found out the truth, the final plot twist would leave us in shock.
Here are some Hollywood movies with the best plot twist and red herrings that I was inspired by!
